 Chloride Environmental Sensor Acts as Mini Building Monitoring System for Remote UPS Sites

-- Versatile Network Card and Environmental Sensor Combination Broadens Potential for Remotely Monitoring Replicated Sites --

LIBERTYVILLE, IL, January 25, 2010 -- Until now, environmental monitoring of remote replicated sites, such as ATMs, fast food restaurants, or convenience stores, required the deployment of a dedicated Environment or Building Monitoring System at costs of five thousand dollars or more per site.

To help make BMS-style device monitoring affordable at smaller remote sites, Chloride North America suggests the use of its Environment Sensor accessory module as an affordable add-on to any Chloride UPS systems fitted with company's ManageUPS™ NET adapter -an SNMP/WEB card with event logging, network server shutdown and other features.

Conventionally, the Environmental Sensor is to continuously monitor ambient temperature and relative humidity levels in UPS rooms, communications closets or IT racks fitted with Chloride UPS and ManageUPSnet adapter. However, since each sensor can also read status of volt-free contacts, and multiple sensors can be deployed up to 300-feet away from the ManageUPS NET adapter, the Chloride UPS Management system can bring BMS-like remote monitoring capabilities to any device that communicates status via standard volt-free ("dry") relay contact points - including enclosure doors, generators, air conditioning units, light sensors etc.- all for a small fraction of the cost of a stand-alone standard BMS. Several additional sensor modules can be connected to enable the monitoring of multiple zones or devices from a single UPS network adapter, an ideal solution for monitoring critical systems in large campus or remote site environments.

Once deployed, the Chloride system plays the role of a mini-BMS, scaled for small remote sites. It is easily configured via the WEB interface to:

  • set high and low threshold alarms for temperature and relative humidity;
  • define alarm severity - critical or warning;
  • name the input relay to represent the device it is connected to;
  • define whether the normal relay state is open or closed;
  • customize emails to send alarm/status information upwards to a central NOC, IT Help Desk, or text message to mobile phone;
  • Or, integrate with Chloride ManageUPS CIO, central monitoring platform - allowing 100s of sites to be continuously monitored as a distributed asset pool from a central location.

"Most Chloride customers are accustomed to using our environment sensors to monitor ambient conditions within a room, closet or enclosed IT rack where their UPS is installed," explained Yolanda Hernandez, Director of Marketing for Chloride. "Yet, the scope of monitoring capability is actually much broader. When coupled with our UPS ManageUPSNET adapter, the Environment Sensor enables the system to serve as a small scale "BMS system" deployed at a remote site or zone. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a traditional BMS, a Chloride customer invests only a few hundred dollars to extend the monitoring capabilities of their UPS system to serve an expanded role"

The ManageUPSNET adapter is powered internally by the UPS and drives power to the environment sensors, an advantage that translates into simpler, less costly installation.
